Have Studio, Will Travel

Paint NC Plein Air event

Paint NC Plein Air event

This Summer I had the pleasure of traveling to many places. As an artist I’m always looking at the landscape around me and marveling at the beauty and thinking about how I can translate what I see in to a painting.

Photography is a great tool but with the click of a button your image is captured and you are off to the next beautiful thing. Plein-air painting (painting on location) is more like a meditation on a view.

Adirondack Painting trip

Adirondack Painting trip

I travel with a back pack which holds my palette, paints, brushes and other supplies… a portable studio!  Once I set up to paint I know I have no more than 3 hours to capture my interpretation of my view before the sun has presented me with a whole new light and shadow pattern.

Adirondacks in NY

When I look back on the painting I created on site I can remember the smells, the temperature, the sounds and yes sometimes even the bugs. I could never get this with a photo.

November 21st Gallery East in Spartanburg, SC – 512 East Main St will be showing a collection of my paintings created en plein air and studio paintings inspired by plein air paintings. If you are in town I hope you will stop by. Some other surprises during the reception are also being planned.

Hope you enjoy some of the images below for this year’s painting adventures.

My Outdoor Studio

November 21, 2013 I will be have an art show at Gallery East in Spartanburg, SC exhibiting paintings I created on location (plein-air) and studio paintings inspired by my plein-air paintings.

Leading up to the show I’ll begin to post some of my adventures and pics to go along with them.

One a recent camping trip to Camp Croft I set up my easel to record some of what I was seeing around me. This particular site has a panorama view of the lake.  It sure is magical to wake up in the morning to see the sun rising over the water. This was a short stay with rain coming in to shorten it even more, so I was able to paint this one sketch. 10″x8″ oil on linen.

Mid June I will be traveling to the adirondacks to paint with over 100 other plein-air artists so I should come home with a lot to share.

Christmas Commission of a Furry Family Member

Christmas Commission

About halfway through the year I start to get calls from people interested in having their furry family member painted as a gift for Christmas.

I grew up having dogs as family members but now I travel a lot so our furry family member is a 10 month old kitten named Gracie. She gets to stay with Grandmother when I hit the rode. When ever I receive a commission for a dog it is extra special…. I get a wonderful dog fix. Someone once told me dogs teach us unconditional love and cats teach us detachment.

Below are images of the process of my recent commission. It starts with a block in then I just keep refining the details. Sort of like having an out of focus photo that gets clearer and clearer as the painting becomes more complete. The painting is an oil on canvas 18″ x 24″
